The history of Nieuw-Dordrecht is marked by two important events: the construction of a prehistoric wooden road through the peat and the plan to dig a canal through the Hondsrug. Although both attempts to open up the area were stopped halfway, they still led to major changes. The road caused deforestation, and the canal plans attracted workers, creating Nieuw-Dordrecht.
The artwork ‘De Aanleg’ by Gerard Groenewoud and Tilly Buij symbolises this process. The sculpture shows the lower body of a man, with one leg transitioning into a tree trunk. This symbolises the balance between movement and rooting, a central theme in the history of Nieuw-Dordrecht.
