Numerous works of art by local artist Homme Veenema can be admired in the municipality of Emmen. Well-known works include the Spelende Beren in Wilhelminastraat, Man and Horse near the R.K. Church in Barger-Compascuum, and the Diving Whale and Swimmer in the De Rietlanden neighbourhood. In Noordbarge is a sculpture Without a Title, depicting the village's history, and the impressive Mammoth can be found in the Veenpark. Veenema's animal sculptures in the centre of Emmen, commissioned by the former Dierenpark, particularly attract attention.
Homme Veenema is self-taught and lives and works in Emmen. Although he specialises in woodworking, he also works with materials such as granite, marble and bronze. His style is figurative, often depicting animals and historical figures, and he has developed into a respected artist both at home and abroad.
