The school was founded in 1933 according to Maria Montessori's educational methodology. The basic principle of this school is that the child develops a natural, necessary urge for self-development.
Anne Frank entered kindergarten here from 1934. Like her sister Margot, Anne was a bright pupil with broad general interests. Anne witnessed the school's move to this location on Niersstraat in May 1934. Here she also attended primary school. Despite her eagerness to learn, Anne was meant to follow a seventh year at the Montessori school, but due to the exclusion of Jews from regular education, this could not take place. Anne was allowed to go straight on to secondary school. This became the Jewish Lyceum. In September 1941, one hundred and fifty-eight Jewish children had to leave the Montessori school on Niersstraat.
A special feature is the large mural on the school's facade, which incorporates a passage from Anne's diary. The text reads: ‘I love Holland, I once hoped that it may serve me fatherless as a homeland, I still hope so. Your Anne M. Frank.'
