Two statues of Anne Frank, the Jewish girl who symbolised the victims of the Holocaust worldwide, have risen in Amsterdam. The first stands near her parents' house on Merwedeplein and this second was unveiled on Westermarkt in 1977. Anne's father, Otto Frank, was also present at the unveiling.
The initiator of this statue was Contact Publishers, the publisher of Anne Frank's diary. The publisher donated the statue, created by artist Mari Andriessen (Haarlem 1897-1979), to the city of Amsterdam.
The statue shows Anne Frank as she would have liked to be, but never became. A young woman enjoying life. Standing proudly upright and with her hands behind her back. The statue can be found in front of the southern side wall of the Westerkerk, near the Anne Frank House.
The text on the pedestal reads:
'ANNE FRANK
1929 - 1945.'
