The construction of Amsterdam Central Station was commissioned in 1869. First, an artificial island had to be created in the IJ. After that, architects could start designing. The most famous of them is Pierre Cuypers, who designed this monumental building together with A.L. van Gendt.
Of course, the building was expanded over the years by different architects: Joseph Cuypers (indeed, the son of), Benthem Crouwel architects, TAK architects, MerkX, Powerhouse architects and Wiel Arets architects have made the building what it is today, without compromising the original design by Cuypers and Van Gendt.
