In 1525, when Tiel was still considered by the Hanseatic League to be merely a suburb of Nijmegen, the Ambtmanshuis was built. It served as the residence of the Ambtman (administrator of the area on behalf of the sovereign), dike reeve and richter Adriaen van Bueren. He was married to Anna van Gelre, a daughter unmarried to Charles of Gelre. A successor of Adriaen, Frederik Louis baron van Brakel, was murdered here by his son-in-law, Isaäc Steven baron van Deelen. Later it came into the possession of wealthy families. The last residents were the parents of the actress Mary Dresselhuys. Her portrait still hangs in the building. In 1939, it became the seat of the Tielerwaard polder district. Now it is part of the town hall complex of the municipality of Tiel.
