Huis Almelo, a historic manor house in Almelo, dates back to the 13th century and was once the centre of the seigniory of Almelo. The castle was first mentioned in a 1297 will of Egbert of Almelo. Although its original appearance is unknown, a 1560 map by Jacobus van Deventer offers an impression of the house and its surroundings. Almelo remained a seigniory until 1795, whose territories later included the municipalities of Stad Almelo, Ambt Almelo and Vriezenveen.
In 1652, the original house was replaced by a new castle, but it was badly damaged during the 1665 invasion by the bishop of Münster. Repairs followed, and between 1883 and 1885, Huis Almelo underwent a major restoration. The castle is still owned by the Van Rechteren Limpurg family, which had influence in Almelo for centuries. Until 2019, the last count was committed to preserving historical buildings and maintaining the family forests.
