In 1854, the still young architect Petrus Josephus Hubertus Cuypers (1827-1921) built the neo-Gothic castle Aerwinkel, commissioned by judge Pierre Geradts. A castle with pointed arches, arched turrets, pilasters and battlements in a landscape park created in the same period. The park has the house as its centrepiece and may also be by Cuypers.
The country estate lies along the steep edge of the Vlootbeek valley, incised in the low terraces of the Meuse. This landscape feature forms the basis for the name Aerwinkel, as ‘winkels’ are protruding terraces in the wet stream valleys. Recently, the landscaped rhododendron garden has been restored, a garden restoration to the style of 1850, with plant species from that era and supplemented with plantings appropriate to that era.
