The Koepoort has been a gateway to the west side of the city of Enkhuizen for hundreds of years. The gate was part of the city's defensive wall. There is a small bend in the gate opening, making it impossible to shoot through the gate.

On the side of the city on the gate is a statue made by Han Sterk: the city virgin of Enkhuizen.
